Christian Dior 1958 Dress

Exquisite and very rare Christian Dior by Yves Saint Laurent dress from 1958 . This dress is made out of a luxurious thick black silk and has a Christian Dior label that reads “ Patron Original”. The "Patron Original" label served a dual purpose: it identified a custom-made gown tailored for a client, which could deviate from the original runway version or be an entirely unique creation in a collaborative effort between client and designer. Alternatively, particularly in earlier times, it functioned as a "sample" crafted by the atelier and dispatched to licensed ateliers for production in different markets, adhering to the house's stringent oversight. This ingenious practice, pioneered by the house of Dior, circumvented rigorous customs controls. Any piece bearing this label is revered as Haute Couture. In this instance, this dress could have been a custom made tailored dress for a client that was inspired by a similar version that was presented on the runway this season, or a sample. 1958 is the year Yves Saint Laurent was appointed at the head of Christian Dior after Dior suddenly passed away. Saint Laurent’s Spring Summer 1958 “Ligne Trapeze” collection for Christian Dior was his very first for the house and marked a turning point in the fashion world as it was so innovative. This dress is a testimony of this moment in time.
