Iconic Prada pants from Spring Summer 1996 “Banal Eccentricity” collection (also known as “ugly chic” collection) as seen on the runway that season. The pants are made out of a stretchy cotton gabardine with a hand designed motif inspired from 70s psychedelic square shapes associated with the hippies. Miuccia Prada hand painted these motifs in order to make them high fashion instead of just printing them. What Prada loved about the pattern were the smears, the mistakes. They seemed accidental, but they were actually deliberate. For her spring 1996 collection Prada made it an exercise to elevate cheap and obsolete patterns into high fashion. This collection as been associated with bad taste as Prada used unconventional colors and prints, and mixed them together. For Miuccia Prada bad taste is part of our history, part of our culture. But it's scorned in the fashion industry. Sometimes, fashion focuses on fixed, narrow, and limited notions of beauty, luxury, and glamour. Prada spring 1996 collection attempted to upend these prescribed concepts.
